A week ago my husband bought some old books at an auction. He got 4 crates @ a dollar a crate. In one of the crates was an old hymnal. I had a hard time at first tearing a page out, but then I thought... dp at a fraction of penny a page, and that made it a lot easier. I used a page from the old hymnal to make a journal page. The page was bigger than my little art journal so I turned it side ways and it folds about where the lace is. I stamped the tree 3 times and sprayed blue paint. I used chalk to add the green. I painted the little brown church just peeking into the journal,.
The story behind the song was very interesting to me. A man was traveling through a village in northern Iowa and saw a clearing that he thought would make a neat place for a church, but there wasn't a church there. He wrote a poem that was later put to music about that church that was only in his imagination. He put the poem in a drawer and forgot about it. The villagers on their own decided to build a church and they chose that same location. They also ended up painting the church brown. All of this without knowing what he had written. He was traveling back by that location and was shocked to see the little brown church standing right where he had imagined it. .
Lovely page

ReplyDeleteWhat a cool story and a great page to bring it to life!
ReplyDeleteGreat buy on the books. Love the page you created. Hugz
ReplyDeleteLove the story behind the hymn and how you made your page to reflect the history!! I don't think I could have dismantled the hymnal, though, unless it already had pages falling out!!! Beautiful work!!!
